Prior to the 7.0 magnitude earthquake, Haiti was listed as the poorest country in the western world. Last year Haiti paid more in debt payments than it did on medical services for the people. In their hour of desperation, NOW is the time to forgive Haiti’s debt!

I am writing to ask your support for legislation to require the Secretary of the Treasury to use the broad vote and influence of the United States within the multilateral financial institution to cancel all of Haiti’s remaining debt.
As Haiti rebuilds from this disaster, please work to secure the immediate cancellation of Haiti’s $1.885 billion debt and ensure that any emergency earthquake assistance is provided in the form of grants, not debt-incurring loans.
Canceling the debts will free up the major resources, allowing Haiti to begin meeting its immediate and long-term needs.
Debt cancellation is critical for Haiti’s future and is an important component of the overall aid we can provide to the country.
